“The kids here, they’re like us, they’re like everybody else.”
-Stacy Johnson, Mustard Seed School Education Director
The Mustard Seed School is a private emergency school for homeless children, providing an environment where every child is seen, heard, and valued. The school’s mission is to break the cycle of poverty through education, empowering students to reach their full potential and overcome the obstacles posed by their circumstances. The Blue Rose Foundation has provided scholarships to The Mustard Seed School, located in Sacramento, California, for over 6 years.
“I think our culture, our society doesn’t view children as capable as they are. And I think it’s even more so with kids experiencing homelessness.”
We, the Junior Ambassadors, were lucky enough to visit the Mustard Seed School twice in 2023. During the first visit on August 11th, we got the chance to talk with Stacy Johnson, Education Director, and learn more about the incredible opportunity that this school gives to its students. During the interview, we learned that not only does the school provide education to its students but also a support system for every student to make sure they are not only heard but can come to thrive.
When asked about what she would tell people who had never heard of the Mustard Seed School or Loaves and Fishes, Stacy responds with,“Just ‘hello.’ I think just that ‘the parents here and the kids here, they’re like us, they’re like everybody else.’” Showing that these kids are just that, kids, and they deserve to be treated as such. During the interview Stacy Johnson also notes that, “our main concern is meeting people where they are. And that’s a goal,” giving insight on how understanding and addressing the unique needs and circumstances of individuals is of utmost importance. Furthermore when asked “If you could change one thing about how homeless children are viewed, what would you change?” Stacy Johnson answered with, “capability?… I think our culture, our society doesn’t view children as capable as they are. And I think it’s even more so with kids experiencing homelessness.” Shedding light on the societal misconception that children experiencing homelessness are somehow less capable or deserving of opportunities.
“…meeting people where they are, as we were able to bond over shared moments of creativity and delight.”
During our second visit, we had the amazing opportunity to engage with the children in a fun and festive activity: decorating holiday cookies. It was heartwarming and inspiring to see the excitement and joy on the little faces as they eagerly grabbed their cookies and icing, ready to bring their creations to life. This experience further reinforced the school’s commitment to meeting people where they are, as we were able to bond over shared moments of creativity and delight. The event not only allowed us to contribute to their holiday festivities, but it also served as a reminder that simple acts of kindness and involvement can have a profound impact on the lives of these young students. After the cookie decorating we were also able to read a book with the kids and enjoyed the joy on their faces when jumping into the wonders of literature.
Overall, the Mustard Seed School is a beacon of hope and opportunity for children experiencing homelessness. We hope to see you again soon!
